Montserrat Ramirez De Angel takes “Best Pitch” award at IEEE 2024 Sensors Conference

24 December, 2024

KAUST PhD student and MS alumna Montserrat Ramirez De Angel (MS '22) is working on technology that could greatly improve the lives of millions with speech sound disorders (SSDs).

Ramirez De Angel and her colleagues' wireless, wearable headsets incorporate magnetic field sensors to detect and process user mouth movements. The system then streams speech data to a head unit, which analyzes and predicts intended words and letters. So far, the assistive technology has successfully identified all the letters in the English alphabet with an impressive average success rate of 94.96%.

Her innovative research earned her the top prize at the Women in Sensors (WiSe)-YP Big Idea Pitch Competition at the 23rd IEEE SENSORS.

Congratulations to KAUST Bioengineering student Montserrat on this achievement as she continues her Ph.D. journey under the supervision of Professor Khaled N Salama.
